\nThe following are our definitions for dietary terminology that is present in the response payload of the API.
\nRestaurant Diet Tags:
\nGluten-free options - Gluten-friendly or “gluten-free” options are available at this restaurant. Please note that this restaurant does not have a 100% gluten-free facility or dedicated methods to mitigate cross-contamination. Celiac patrons are not recommended to eat here. \nIngredients & Allergens Tags:
\nHigh-FODMAP - FODMAPS are short-chain carbs that are common in many foods including but not limited to onions, peaches, beans, lentils, dairy products (lactose), sweeteners, breads, and many vegetables.
\nHigh-Carb - These foods are high in carbs, and may be loaded with sugar and starch. These should not be eaten on a Ketogenic diet.
\nHigh Sugar - Foods high in the very common sweet, soluble carbohydrates called sugar. Donuts, chocolate chip cookies, and strawberry jam are just a few examples of what we consider high in sugar.
\nGarlic - Related to the onion family, this powerful, nutrient packed ingredient has been used in food and medicine for thousands of years. It may be tagged due to sub-ingredients and is common in many recipes as an enhancer.
\nNightshade - A group of fruits and vegetables that include but are not limited to eggplants, tomatoes, bell peppers, and potatoes. They may cause inflammatory reactions for some people with intolerances.
\nPotatoes - Energy-packed with more potassium than a banana. Includes both white and sweet potatoes.
\nRice - The most widely consumed staple in the world, rice can come in many forms and is found in a variety of dishes, especially in Asian cuisine.
\nBeef - Culinary name for meat from cattle (cows).
\nOther Red Meat - Red meats (excluding beef) include: lamb, mutton, veal, venison, goat, and other meats that are commonly red in colour when raw.
\nWhite Meat - Light in colour meat such as chicken, turkey, and other poultry.
\nPork - Culinary name for meat from pigs. Also includes pork derivatives such as lard and gelatin.
\nFish - Salmon, tuna, trout, halibut, snapper, sea bass, and more. This does not include shellfish.
\nOther Seafood - All seafood (except fish) including shellfish, molluscs, crustaceans, and other aquatic animals.
\nTofu - A food made from condensed soy milk - commonly prepared as a vegan or vegetarian alternative.
\nPeanuts - Plentiful in vitamins and minerals, peanuts are legumes that grow underground. Note, peanuts are not actually “nuts”.
\nTreenuts - Tree nuts include but are not limited to walnuts, almonds, cashews, pecans, pistachios, Brazil nuts, hazelnuts, shea nuts, chestnuts, and macadamia nuts. We have also added coconut-based ingredients as a trigger for this tag out of an abundance of caution - many of those with tree nut allergies cannot eat coconut.
\nDairy - Dairy is tagged by ingredients produced by the milk of mammals, primarily from cattle, goats, and sheep.
\nCheese - Cheese is tagged by the multitude of types of the dairy -based product. It can be incorporated in a variety of different ways in dishes.
\nEggs - Packed with nutrients, the most common eggs are chicken eggs. Eggs are widely used in cooking and can be found as an ingredient in many food items.
\nWheat - Pasta, bread, cake, cookies, etc. - this tag encompasses all derivatives of the cereal grain.
\nGluten - Gluten is a hidden allergen and the general name for the proteins found mostly in wheat, barley and rye products. Gluten can also hide in plain sight, such as in soy-based products.
\nSoy - Soy, derived from the soybean, has numerous uses in food. Soy is used in tofu, soy milk, and many meat and dairy alternative foods.
\nSesame Seeds - A common ingredient with a nutty flavour, sesame is used in dishes such as goma-ae, tahini, halva, breads, and more.
\nFruit - From acai berries to mangos to bananas, this tag encompasses all fruit and fruit-based ingredients.
\nShellfish - Seafood that Includes but not limited to molluscs, crustaceans, and echinoderms. A common food allergen.
\nCorn - Also known as maize, corn is one of the most popular foods in the world. Find it on a cob, mixed with rice, in burritos, and in many other dishes.
\nHoney - The sweet, sticky nectar made by bees, and a common alternative to refined sugar.
\nSpicy Food - Any food or ingredient that constitutes an above-average level of 'spiciness'.
\nMushrooms - A fungus produced above ground, including the most common species as well as truffles.
\nOnions - Onions include but are not limited to red onions, white onions, green onions, leeks, shallots, and chives.
\nLegumes - Legumes include but are not limited to beans, peas, lentils, and chickpeas.
\nDiets Returned:
\nWe support more diets than the following but these are the ones returned in the responses to verify
1. Vegan: This diet excludes all animal products. This includes meat (beef, pork, white meat, red meat, fish, shellfish, seafood), dairy products (cheese, milk), eggs, and honey.
\n2. Gluten-Free (GF): This diet excludes all foods containing gluten, a protein found in wheat, barley, and rye. In this case, it specifically excludes gluten and wheat.
\n3. Dairy-Free: This diet excludes all dairy products. This includes cheese and milk.
\n4. Vegetarian: This diet excludes all forms of meat and seafood. This includes beef, pork, white meat, red meat, fish, shellfish, and seafood. However, unlike the vegan diet, it may include dairy products and eggs.
\n5. Keto: The ketogenic diet is a low-carb, high-fat diet. It drastically reduces carbohydrate intake and replaces it with fat. This reduction in carbs puts your body into a metabolic state called ketosis. In this case, it specifically excludes rice, high sugar, and high carbohydrates.
\n6. Nut-Free: This diet excludes all types of nuts. This includes tree nuts and peanuts. This diet is often followed by people who have a nut allergy.
